“Lend Risa your courage and wisdom”

Risa no Yōsei Densetsu, or Risa's Fairy Legend, released for the Family Computer Disk System on June 1988 under the catchphrase “Lend Risa your courage and wisdom,” is a fantasy adventure game developed and published by Konami during the final years of Japan's idol boom. Taking direct inspiration from Nintendo's Nakayama Miho no Tokimeki High School, Konami reinterpreted the concept of an idol-centred adventure through fantasy rather than contemporary romance, developing the game as part of a broader multimedia project.
Starring singer and actress Risa Tachibana, known for her intense gaze and distinctive smile, the game combines a traditional command-based adventure with a fairy-tale narrative spanning four distinct chapters, drawing upon folklore and mythology as Risa and the player embark on a quest to save a magical kingdom threatened by darkness.
Throughout the story, Risa displays curiosity, compassion and determination as she encounters magical creatures and legendary beings. She participates in conversations and takes an active role in the quest to restore peace to the fairy kingdom. Her approachable and kind personality reflects the public image cultivated through her music and television appearances.
The player assumes the role of a devoted fan of Risa Tachibana, who serves as her companion throughout the adventure.
The player interacts by choosing actions from a series of commands that include Look, Talk, Take, Move, Use and Check, gradually solving puzzles, collecting objects, examining his surroundings, speaking with characters and manipulating objects in order to progress.
During conversations with Risa, her portrait appears within the command window and changes according to her emotions, with expressions ranging from happiness and anger to sadness. A heart symbol also appears beside the command when the player talks to Risa or observes her expression.
Objects, ranging from ordinary household items to magical artifacts, must often be used in highly specific circumstances. Objects obtained during one chapter may become useful much later, and carrying the correct item at the appropriate moment frequently determines the progression of the story. As the adventure progresses, both the complexity and variety of the puzzles increase.
Many incorrect actions result in immediate failure, as dangerous creatures, magical traps and hostile characters often punish careless decisions without warning. The player can reload his saved progress or restart from an earlier point in the chapter.
Risa no Yōsei Densetsu formed part of a broader promotional project centred on Risa Tachibana's sixth single, Risa no Yōsei Densetsu -FAIRY TALE-. Released by Toshiba EMI less than a month after the game, the single served as the game's official image song, with lyrics containing hidden words and phrases that could help the player solve certain puzzles. Additional clues were concealed within Risa Tachibana's choreography and television appearances, transforming her musical performances into an extension of the adventure itself.
The game's soundtrack, composed by Konami Kukeiha Club, features a rich selection of memorable tracks.
At certain points during the adventure, when the player gets stuck, a huge multi-digit number would appear on screen, which he could call to access a dedicated hotline. The hotline featured recorded messages from Risa Tachibana herself, which contained hints to help the player advance through the adventure. While the concept had previously appeared in Nakayama Miho no Tokimeki High School, Konami refined the system with different regional telephone numbers throughout Japan to reduce long-distance charges.
One scene requires the use of the microphone built into the second Famicom controller.
The story begins at one of Risa Tachibana's concerts, where the player is caught in a mysterious flash of lightning that transports both of them into a parallel world. They encounter the Fairy of Light, who becomes their guide throughout the quest and bears Risa's exact appearance. Believing that Risa possesses a pure heart capable of restoring balance, the Fairy of Light reveals that the pair have been summoned to save the magical kingdom from Delilah, the Witch of Darkness, whose growing influence threatens the entire realm.
To restore peace and return home, they must recover three sacred treasures: the Harp of Peace, the Sacred Sword of Justice and the Jewel of Love.
Each chapter introduces new environments, characters, and situations inspired by well-known works of European literature and folklore, bringing them together within a single narrative centred upon Risa. These include The Little Match Girl, Hansel and Gretel, The Little Mermaid, alongside figures such as Medusa and references to the Japanese legend of Urashima Tarō. The adventure also features numerous villagers, magical creatures and guardians who contribute to the local narrative. Although few reappear after their respective chapters conclude, they play an important role by providing clues, presenting puzzles, and illustrating the effects of Delilah's growing influence over the kingdom.
Chapter One begins in Tree Town, a peaceful settlement surrounded by dense woodland that has fallen under the influence of dark magic. Among its inhabitants is the Little Match Girl. The mayor, Blaak, has lost his daughter. The player must defeat the giant rat haunting the wine cellar beneath the mayor’s house, find his daughter Luita, and obtain the mayor's Harp of Peace.
Chapter Two begins as the protagonists leave Tree Town and venture into the Heavenly Forest, an enchanted landscape populated by magical creatures and increasingly dangerous obstacles. The chapter features the spring spirit from The Golden Axe, the gingerbread house and witch from Hansel and Gretel, as well as a unicorn and a rabbit named Lloyd reminiscent of Alice in Wonderland. A sequence inspired by Jack and the Beanstalk has the player exchange a cow for magic beans.
The third chapter moves the adventure beneath the sea, where Risa and the player are separated by a sudden storm. Risa is rescued from drowning by a sea turtle reminiscent of the Japanese legend of Urashima Tarō, who asks her to help find a missing mermaid princess. Within an underwater temple, they eventually discover that the princess has been turned to stone by Medusa, whose hair consists of countless venomous snakes. After defeating Medusa and obtaining the Sacred Sword, the pair reach the shore, where Risa eats a poisoned apple reminiscent of Snow White and is abducted by Delilah, the Witch of Darkness.
The final chapter brings the protagonists to Delilah's stronghold, the Witch's Castle, surrounded by a dense barrier of thorns and marked by a considerably darker atmosphere. Inside, the player must rescue Risa, free the shadows of monsters imprisoned by Delilah, and solve a series of riddles posed by a lizard whose tail resembles a key. At the top of the castle, Delilah and Risa vanish through a mirror. Beyond the mirror, the protagonist encounters two identical versions of Risa. In a scene reminiscent of Cinderella, the protagonist identifies the real Risa using her prism high heel, which fits her perfectly but does not fit Delilah, despite her identical appearance. After their escape from the mirror world, the pair use the Harp of Peace, the Jewel of Love and the Sacred Sword to defeat Delilah and escape the collapsing castle. With peace restored to the magical kingdom, they finally return to the real world, bringing their adventure to an end.
Their extraordinary journey concludes where it began, and what initially seemed like an ordinary concert became the beginning of an unforgettable adventure.
Risa no Yōsei Densetsu remains one of the most unusual adventure games released for the Family Computer Disk System. Konami created an original fantasy adventure that combines command-based gameplay, literary influences, and an ambitious multimedia campaign, with every major element serving the same central concept: accompanying a real-life celebrity through a fairy-tale world that extends beyond the boundaries of the console itself.
